Wedding traditions may come and go, but one of the most enduring ones is the special first dance. In fact, 92% of couples shared a first dance at their wedding in 2018 according to a report released this year. And out of that 92%, it seems that around 46% choose a song that reflects their relationship or how they met, and 41% pick a personal favourite.
Around 21% of American couples choose a country song for their first dance with pop songs coming in second and R&B in third.
The country song ‘Speechless’ by Dan + Shay was one of the most popular first dance songs in 2019 and the fact that they sang it live at Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner’s wedding earlier in the year probably helped its popularity.
Another country song, ‘Good as You’ by Kane Brown, was also popular first dance song in 2019 – perhaps helped by the fact that it’s quite short!
When it came to pop music, ‘Love Someone’ by Lukas Graham was a common choice for first dances in 2019, even though it’s relatively new.
Ed Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ which was released in 2014 and has been a popular first dance song for years tailed off a little in 2019, possibly because couples think it is a little too popular – which could also be the reason why ‘All of Me’ by John Legend has been picked less this year. However, both artists are still very popular romantic choices.
Should you be having that first dance at your wedding, just remember that however you come to the decision it’s your choice, so enjoy it.
